Consumers Ranked Rum as the Second-Preferred Spirit-Base for RTDs

Consumers Ranked Rum as the Second-Preferred Spirit-Base for RTDs
February 9, 2023 Off By Emily Cruz Villegas

According to a nationwide survey conducted by the Drizly platform in October 2022, consumers expect to spend more on spirits like tequila and rum in 2023. The report shows that 33% of respondents cited rum, followed by bourbon with 32% and American whiskey with 31%.

Although tequila was the top-cited spirit with 35%, rum beat bourbon, whiskey, and gin. Rum is thus expected to become the drink of choice for spirits consumers this year.

BevAlc Trend Report, supplemented with sales data, also confirmed that ready-to-drink options would no longer be seasonal but a year-round staple in bar carts. In general, at least 47% of consumers expect to purchase RTDs during all seasons. This means that RTDs will experience over 400% share growth since 2019 in the spirits category, based on Drizly’s previous reports.

Likewise, consumers also showed interest in knowing more about what they are drinking in 2023. Most drinkers emphasized two key factors that would inspire them to purchase more products: clearer tasting notes and transparency in the ingredient list.
